Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Chief of Communications and Outreach, incumbent will assist in developing material needed to inform various stakeholder groups about the activities of City Utilities.  The intern will be provided opportunities to learn about the City Utilities’ projects, programs and initiatives and will gain an understanding of how public entities provide customer support and engagement in the public service sector. The position offers opportunities to build a portfolio. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City and Utility's safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the design and development of brochures, flyers, newsletter articles, PowerPoints, videos and other informational material related to City Utilities programs including customer support, resource recovery and recycling, drinking water quality, neighborhood construction projects, river water quality improvements, and stormwater initiatives.
  • Assist with web updates and photo documentation.
  • Support the planning and execution of public events.
  • Assist in developing material to use at community events to educate customers and residents about City Utilities.
  • Schedule and organize presentations and tours for community groups.
  • Staff and coordinate City Utilities presentations, meetings, and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Two years of college or technical school and must be currently enrolled at a college or university or pursuing requirements for a degree program in communication, journalism or graphic arts or closely related field. Knowledge of Microsoft and Adobe products.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Maintains a valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used.
