March 12, 2014 - City plow truck operators plowed all day long to remove the thick wet snow left by the latest winter storm. Crews were able to plow secondary streets this afternoon and at this hour have begun to plow neighborhoods to clear residential streets. As long as we do not receive more snow, crews will remain on residential streets through the night and should complete the neighborhood streets by tomorrow afternoon. If possible, residents are urged to not park in the street so trucks can get as close to the curb as possible.

A freezing rain along with a rapid snowfall and high winds that caused drifting, created a wet and heavy snow that made plowing difficult because of the additional weight.

Currently, eight traffic signals are not functioning due to power outages. Additionally, the wet snow has covered several traffic signals that face north. Crews have managed to clear some of those signals but motorists are advised to treat non-functioning or non-visible signals as a four way stop. Traffic crews with bucket trucks will be out all night clearing the snow that is caked on the traffic signals.

Earlier today, because of the thick wet snow, Republic Services halted Wednesday’s garbage and recycling collection schedule. As a result, garbage and recycling will run one day behind for the remainder of the week.

This week’s schedule Garbage and Recycling Schedule:

Wednesday collection will be Thursday

Thursday collection will be Friday

Friday collection will be Saturday

Traffic Signals affected by power outages:

Bluffton Road @ Lower Huntington

Airport Expressway @ Lower Huntington
