Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Pre-School/Youth Sports Coordinator, incumbent conducts and supervises Pre-School/Youth Staff and activities. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Accepts Pre-School/Youth site assignments. May have to switch sites and activities during working schedule;
  • Reports directly to Pre-School/Youth Sports Coordinator;
  • Attends June In-Service Training Orientation. This includes seasonal employee training (Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP), Child Protection Awareness (SCAN), General Safety Training, etc.), Coaches Training, and Program Content;
  • Attends all weekly staff meetings;
  • Organizes, teaches, supervises, and evaluates weekly activities in Basketball, Soccer, T-ball, and all other programs/classes according to the area assigned. Must follow pre-set themes;
  • Encourages and motivates children to attend on a regular basis;
  • Encourages and motivates staff to do their best;
  • Meets with staff to plan daily activities and assigns responsibilities;
  • Is accountable for recording accurate daily attendance reports for each sport, and turns in weekly at staff meetings;
  • Is responsible for collecting and compiling program evaluations at end of each session;
  • Is responsible for each participant’s safety during the time they are participating and maintaining discipline among participants as well as staff;
  • Is responsible for monitoring equipment and supplies to be at the program site as well as maintained and used properly. Reports and turns in any damaged equipment. Lost or damaged equipment due to staff negligence will be replaced with same quality by negligent staff person(s);
  • Directs the work of employees assigned to assist, including enforcing policies and procedures;
  • Assists in other areas as needed;
  • Participates in a final personnel evaluation;
  • Reports and documents any problems immediately with staff, children or adults to the Pre-School/Youth Sports Coordinator or Supervisor;
  • Conducts final personnel evaluations for each staff person assigned to your site;
  • Turns in at weekly staff meeting a weekly summary of the weeks activities;
  • Wears Park Department staff T-shirt at all times during working hours and comply with dress code for the summer program;
  • Is responsible for enforcing dress code;
  • Submits time cards to Pre-School/Youth Sports Coordinator;
  • Reports irregularities and abnormal conditions on the worksite;
  • Arrives at site one half hour before scheduled start time and 15 minutes after last class;
  • Performs duties in accordance with the City’s safety rules and operating regulations and practices;
  • Is responsible for weekly lesson plans to be completed two weeks prior to activity turned into Coordinator at weekly staff meetings.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. If at any time the incumbent is unsure of their role or specific responsibilities, it is the incumbent’s responsibility to refer to their job description and ask for clarification from their supervisor. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent has routine supervision of two (2) – three (3) staff persons and all children participating in activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least18 years of age with one or more years of college preferred in Education, Leisure Service, Sports Recreation or a field related to working with children;

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Must have transportation available at all times;
  • Must have good leadership, organizational and communication skills and have good rapport with children ages 18 months – 12 years;
  • Must work until completion of programs – NO TIME OFF – except for July 4th a regular scheduled holiday;

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used.
