Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Manager of Meter Reading, incumbent collects meter readings from AMR and non-AMR meters and from residential and commercial accounts. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with City and department policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Information/Communication

  • Reports observed problems and unauthorized use of service;
  • Handles customer contacts efficiently and courteously with tact and diplomacy and reports customer inquiries and complaints to supervisor;
  • Reports back with supervisor any issues;

OPERATIONS

  • Reads meters in accordance with daily schedules;
  • Makes special reads, appointment reads, missed meter reads, skip reads, re-reads, and reads on new and closed accounts;
  • Maintains a neat and personable appearance;
  • Operates safely and efficiently any Utility owned vehicles and equipment, including computerized meter reading equipment and hand-held devices;
  • Performs routine repetitive tasks successfully on a daily basis;
  • Follows instructions and regulations on meter reading duties;
  • Performs duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations;
  • Opens, works, adds notes, and closes orders in CIS Mobile;
  • Working knowledge of computer equipment, hardware, software of both Sensus and Itron;

DIAGNOSTIC/PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

  • Performs general maintenance on department vehicles and equipment;

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to use Apple based iPad.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Maintains a valid Indiana Driver’s License.
