April 22, 2022 - The City of Fort Wayne’s St. Joe Center Road and Wheelock Road Trail Project received the 2022 Building Contractors Association of Northeast Indiana (BCA) Excellence in Construction Award last night at BCA’s Spring Membership Dinner & Awards Banquet.

The $818,000 project consists of over 7,100 feet of a ten-foot-wide trail that provides safe and direct pedestrian and bicycle access from Wheelock Road and St. Joe Center Road to the shops and restaurants located on Meijer Drive to the neighborhoods of Chandler’s Landing, Cherry Hill, Mill Ridge Place, Still Water Place and Arlington Park. The trail also provides safe and direct pedestrian and bicycle access for students, parents and teachers to Jefferson Middle School. Previously there were no sidewalks along this corridor.

The project, funded through tax increment financing (TIF) dollars in a partnership between the City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development and Public Works divisions, provided new ADA accessible and compliant ramps and crossings, new storm drainage systems along the corridor, and connectivity to the City’s existing trail system.

The Fort Wayne Area Trails Network consists of nearly 129 miles of trails, with 97.4 miles inside City limits. Most of the trails in City limits are planned, designed, constructed and maintained by the City of Fort Wayne, under the leadership of Mayor Tom Henry.
