December 15, 2014 - Demolition work began today at the former Franklin School site on St. Marys Avenue.

Mayor Tom Henry and community and neighborhood leaders attended today’s launch of the demolition process. The City of Fort Wayne is investing more than $330,000 for the demolition of the property.

The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department will lead the effort to convert the site into a City park.

Green space work and the installation of a splash pad are scheduled to begin in 2015. Final design and cost estimates will be finalized in the coming months.

The City and surrounding neighborhoods have worked together to ensure the property would be viable as a community asset.

“I’m encouraged by the progress we’re making in the ongoing commitment to enhance our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Henry. “By working together, we’re making a meaningful difference as we invest in the future of our City.”

A public input meeting will be held at 7 p.m. this evening at North Highlands Church of Christ, 1414 Archer Ave. Attendees will be able to comment on the preliminary designs for the park.
