Job Description:

SUMMARY

Intern shall work under the direct supervision of Engineering Program Manager within the City of Fort Wayne City Utilities Engineering Department and in cooperation with staff from the Water Pollution Control Plant. This position will assist with the administration and field support of environmental compliance programs and innovative sustainability initiatives, with particular emphasis on the Fort Wayne City Utilities Grease Cooperative, the city’s innovative program to partner with Fort Wayne restaurants to effectively manage waste streams and explore the repurposing of commercial waste for use as a renewable energy feedstock.  The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City and Utility's safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides administrative support for Fort Wayne City Utilities Grease Cooperative and its members, including: scheduling, billing, outreach, and recruitment of new members;
  • Engages in the distribution of educational material and public outreach on fats, oils, and grease (“FOG”), including the recruitment of new restaurants into the Fort Wayne City Utilities Grease Cooperative;
  • Provides support for special studies and environmental research initiatives;
  • Prepares, reviews, and edits documents and awards/grants applications in support of environmental programs and sustainability initiatives;
  • Assists in the field investigations, mapping, water quality sampling and inspections of, FOG collection and storage facilities at businesses (food establishments, etc.)and other compliance/inspection-related duties as assigned;
  • Assists with data entry into spreadsheets and data management systems; scanning and filing of existing hard copy documents; and archiving of environmental records;
  • Performs administrative support functions, including answering phones and greeting customers.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Applicants must be enrolled in a related field of study or be a recent (within the past year) graduate from a related program. Supporting documentation will be required at the time of hire. Student in college with completion of freshman year in a college degree program in any of the following degree paths: environmental sciences, water/wastewater, sustainability, communications/marketing, public policy, engineering, or related field. Strong written and verbal communication skills in addition to working knowledge of Microsoft Office software are required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical information, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain effective work relationships with engineers, contractors and utility customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of algebra and trigonometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define unprecedented problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions by extending accepted methods or developing new ones. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to develop program work plans designed to improve or expand current service levels.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

If a City vehicle is used, successful applicants must have either;

  • A valid Indiana Driver's License, or
  • A valid driver's license accompanied with a notarized or certified copy of the individual's driving record from the state/region/country where such license was issued.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions (cold, hot, wet, humid, etc.), outdoor wilderness (poison ivy, thorns, mosquitos, thick brush, off trail trekking, etc.), and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
