Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Supervisor – Cart Program, incumbent will build, maintain, and repair trash and recycling carts. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

OPERATIONS/Judgement

  • Builds, and repair carts used for residential collection;
  • Acquires daily schedule of cart maintenance work orders;
  • Assesses work orders and loads truck accordingly;
  • Conducts daily routine according to work orders ie-deliveries, exchanges, repairs or pick-ups;
  • Builds and repairs carts utilizing power tools;
  • Investigates illegal dump sites;
  • Performs debris cleanup of illegal dump sites;
  • Investigates Garbage Ordinance Violations and issues citations;
  • Performs garbage user fee appeal site checks;
  • Investigates garbage/recycle collection contract complaints and property damages;
  • Conveys service issues to resident via standard procedure;
  • Communicates effectively with residents, staff and vendors;
  • Identifies potential problem area to immediate supervisor;
  • Assists with receiving and checking all shipments from vendors and suppliers;
  • Works independently in an outdoor environment year-round;
  • When needed help garbage truck driver collect bulk items;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and vendors;

EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT

  • Cleans carts using a cart cleaning machine/power washer;
  • Operates power hand tools to assemble carts;
  • Cleans, maintains, lubricates adjusts and repairs shop tools and equipment;
  • Maintains shop cleanliness and cart inventories;
  • Operates snowplow clearing shop areas and City streets when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

  • Experience with delivery;
  • Ability to operate a snow plow
  • Ability to operate basic maintenance tools;
  • Ability to navigate and read maps;
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and street maps. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Maintains a valid Indiana Driver's License.
