Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the direction of the Administrator of Neighborhood Planning and Activation, with guidance from the Community Development Division Director, the incumbent assists the staff with community outreach and tasks associated with neighborhood-based planning projects and implementation. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies, and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Interact with the public, city, and county staff, City officials, and outside agencies;
  • Research planning-related issues and prepare documents and reports;
  • Assist staff with various day-to-day tasks associated with other planning initiatives;
  • Attend meetings outside typical business hours;
  • Assist with the coordination of public outreach meetings and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Education equivalent to a high school diploma and currently in pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Sociology, Economics, Community Development, or a related field.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Broad knowledge of the principles and procedures of urban planning and community development
  • Ability to work on several projects or initiatives simultaneously
  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana driver’s license if City vehicle is used.
