September 20, 2022 - Today, the City of Fort Wayne Fire Department was awarded $1,668 through the NIPSCO Public Safety & Education Training Grant. Mayor Tom Henry and Fire Chief Eric Lahey are grateful to have this funding to support the purchasing of books required for the FWFD Technical Rescue Team’s certification class.|
“NIPSCO and the NiSource Charitable Foundation have a relentless focus on keeping our customers, communities and employees safe in everything we do,” said Dana Berkes, Public Affairs & Economic Development Manager at NIPSCO, a NiSource Company. “Supporting local first responders is at the core of what we value through all of our service territories.”
The Technical Rescue Team responds to excavation associated emergencies and needs to remain prepared. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, trench rescue certification was delayed for two years. Last week, 20 new individuals were able to attend the Technical Rescue Team certification class. This class required 40 hours of combined classroom and hands-on training including utilizing trench simulators and live excavation trenches.
