May 22, 2023 - Fire Chief Eric Lahey welcomed the Fort Wayne Fire Department’s newest recruit class to their first day of training at the Public Safety Academy today. There are 28 recruits in the class.

Fourteen percent of the FWFD’s 95th recruit class are in a minority group, including two males who identify as Black, one male who identifies as Asian, one male who identifies as Two or More Races and four females who identify as White. There are also 4 veterans in the class.

“Public safety continues to be a top priority as we work together to serve and protect residents, neighborhoods, and businesses,” said Mayor Tom Henry. “I’m encouraged by the outstanding academy class that’s been put together. The women and men selected have shown a commitment to wanting to make a positive difference in our community. I look forward to watching their growth and successes. I wish them the very best.”

The recruits will participate in 20 weeks of training before their graduation day on October 26, 2023.

Participants will obtain the following seven certifications after completing the rigorous, hands-on training:

Fire Fighter I

Fire Fighter II

Emergency Medical Technician (Basic)

Hazardous Materials

Technical Rescue

FEMA National Incident Management System

Fire Apparatus Driver Operator
