November 16, 2023 - Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department was honored at the IPRA Awards of Excellence ceremony as a part of the Indiana Park and Recreation Association conference on November 16.
Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel accepted the Outstanding Agency Award for 2022 on behalf of the Department. The award identifies an exceptional IPRA agency which shows involvement and significant contributions to the parks and recreation field. This agency also strives to improve the quality of life to both their community and to the state of Indiana. Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation was recognized for playing a vital role in providing recreational opportunities which add up to over 1,500 programs each year, preserving natural spaces by maintaining, protecting and restoring habitats and fostering community engagement; from the activity and pride springing from the continued Riverfront Fort Wayne development to ensuring that facilities and programs are accessible to people of all abilities.
“Every year I’m blown away by the accomplishments of our staff” said Director Steve McDaniel. “In 2022, the year this award marks, we were able to add 30 new pickleball courts, celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Franke Park Day Camp, restore Pavilion Three in Foster Park and the historic Wells Street Bridge and earn the 32nd consecutive Tree City USA Award among many other improvements. We have a passionate and talented staff, and I thank the IPRA for this honor and recognition.”
