Public Works Engineering is comprised of five main areas of work. Bridge engineering handles the management and oversight of the 95+ bridges within the city limits to assure their safe passage. City engineering manages the engineering design of over 1,110 miles of roads, 1,500 miles of sidewalks, 100 miles of trails and 12 miles of levees within the city limits for safety, economic vitality, and quality of life. Street light engineering oversees the installation of new lights and the replacement of the over 35,000 existing lights in the city. Traffic engineering supervises the replacements and upgrades  of the over 400 traffic signals and their control system throughout the city and into the county. Transportation engineering oversees and observes the neighborhood maintenance rehabilitation projects, alley projects, resurfacing projects and brick projects to extend the life of or public works assets.
