History of Our Green Fleet
In 2006, The City of Fort Wayne launched a Green City Initiative to develop a comprehensive energy and air quality plan. Since then, Fleet Management has made priorities to eventually reduce overall fleet emissions by 50% and become more environmentally friendly.
Our fleet is nationally recognized as one of the best Green Fleets in North America. One hundred precent 100% of our diesel fuel vehicles run on B20 fuel, and 57% of our entire fleet runs on flex fuel. We have also saved more than 100,000 gallons of gas a year due to our new technologies.

Our Steps Towards "Going Green"
Expanded use of biodiesel (B20) & Ethanol (E85 & E30)
The total percentage of vehicles in our fleet that can run on E85 or E30 is 71% or 570. All diesel units run on B20, 82% of the fleet are green or run on alt fuels
As a part of the cities "Green City Initiative" we have continued to purchase more hybrids.
We currently have 38 hybrids in our fleet, ranging from sedans to class 6 trucks. We also have 8 all electric vehicles. These units are being used in a variety of different City departments. A few examples are the Hybrid Ford Fusion and Hybrid Ford Escapes. They have replaced older sedans and pickups with lower gas mileage. There has been an average increase of 18 MPG overall per unit. The City was also awarded a grant to help purchase five total electric cars.
New LED lights were installed on the fuel island
We have seen a 77% energy savings of 21,525 KW a year. This is based on monthly bills from the previous year. We also replaced fifty eight older lights in shop. The power used went from 400W lights with a candle power of nine to 180 W lights with a candle power of eighty five. We have not been able to track the savings yet because the lights have just recently been installed. An estimate on savings from the vendor is: Based on 18 hours per day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks per year. Total annual savings is 72,072 KWH. If the price is $.08 per KWH this should save $5,765 annually. Plus there is a 400% increase in light level and there will be savings on maintenance of the old lights.
All aerosol cans are pierced by an EPA approved aerosol can piercing device and then the cans are recycled in the steel bin (1,110 cans crushed =277 lbs of cans in 2011). We eliminated lead tire wheel weights and switched to steel weights in 2011, as a result 75lbs have been removed from the waste stream. Cooperatively we are members of an Environmental Stewardship Program.
