June 28, 2021 - The City of Fort Wayne's Community Development Division announced Catherine Toppel as its new Deputy Director of Neighborhood Code Compliance. She began her duties on June 14th.
May 3, 2021 - The Summit City Entrepreneur and Enterprise District (SEED) recently graduated its 20th Build Institute Entrepreneur Education class.
The 14 new companies are launching or relaunching their businesses in the areas of employment for healthcare agencies, adult residential care, childcare centers, housing support for low-income households, and business counseling. The retail businesses include a bookstore, specialty gifts, beauty supply, barber shop, and jewelry. Online businesses include travel and hospitality, and handcrafted wood décor.
April 30, 2021 - Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation has added new restrooms to the north shore portion of Promenade Park, near the PNC Playground. They are also conveniently located near the Rivergreenway which runs along the north side of the park.
The restrooms are fully accessible and designed to be as hands-free as possible. Both restroom doors can be opened automatically and lights are operated with motion sensors, which also save energy costs. The restroom faucets and hand dryers also use sensor technology.
May 3, 2021 - On Friday, April 30, the family of Victure Lee Scruggs unveiled the new Victure Scruggs Memorial Parkway, located on Winter Street between Lewis and Hayden. The City’s Public Works Division offers citizens the opportunity to designate a section of road as a Memorial Parkway through an application process.
Victure Scruggs’ nomination letter referred to him as a politician, counselor, leader and friend who was caring, resourceful and happy to offer help, no matter the task. The nomination also outlined how he provided exceptional service to the East Central Neighborhood Association (ECNA) and the community of Fort Wayne. He was member of ECNA for over 40 years, beginning in 1972 when it was established, and held the offices of president, vice president and secretary. He served on numerous boards and committees, including the NAACP. Scruggs stepped in to finish the term of councilman John Nuckols from 1982 – 1983. As a precinct manager for over 40 years, Scruggs worked hard to improve voter registration. Victure Scruggs was recognized as a true asset to our community.
April 30, 2021 - The National Arbor Day Foundation has awarded the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department with its 31st consecutive Tree City USA designation. Mayor Tom Henry presented a mayoral proclamation on April 30, recognizing Fort Wayne’s continued commitment to preserving a healthy tree canopy in the city.
The city also received the Growth Award for the 16th consecutive year, which highlights innovative programs and projects as well as an increased commitment of resources for urban forestry.
